Diary on the Building of the Extension (click to read in full)
Week 1
January 14th – January 18th 2008
A new year 2008 and a new term at Northampton N.S. The building of the school extension began this week. It rained all the time on Friday. The digger trundled in to make the first cut of the soil.
All week builder J.J. O’Donohue and Engineer Paul Feeney and the Safety Officer were busy making preparations.
· The 2.5 m high hording went up.
· The prefab was moved on telegraph poles up the field it will be a site office / canteen.
· We all got an A3copy of the plan and there’s one on display at school.
The builder cut a window in the hording. We can see what is going on. It’s exciting. Working on site with J.J. this week are Valentino and Dimitri from Brazil and Martin Kerins from Kilmacduagh and Mike Burke is on the digger.
Week 2
21st January – 25th January 2008
When we came back on Monday, the boiler house, the chimney, the kitchen and most of the boy’s toilet was demolished. The boys now have a tiny toilet! The digger driver is busy cutting out the foundation. There is a constant stream of lorries in and out removing soil.
Next, the lorries were unloading stones into the foundation. Mr. McDonagh and Mrs. Costelloe let us view the foundation from the prefab window. We saw that the foundation is about 1m deep. There is brown soil like icing on grey sandy marly soil.
There is the noise of the digger: the lorry unloading jack hammers and the pitter patter of the rain.
Week 3
January 28th – February 1st 2008
This week, the original outside toilets (1953) are gone! Monday morning, we trooped into the hall to see the foundation for the new resource room, office and toilets. We saw the foundation. It had orange plastic to stop radon gas rising and the steel rods were around the edges to make the building strong. At 9.30 a.m. the concrete lorry arrived and that section of the foundation was filled in. The weather was dry and mild. The rest of the foundation is being prepared. The edges are being marked with a wooden frame. We threw in our objects into the foundation. The digger covered them with stones.
We put in –
Holy Water for Esker (Mrs. Costelloe)
St. Bridget’s Cross
Miraculous Medal (Fr.Larkin)
Prayers by Tara Bermingham and Niamh O’Malley
Horse Shoe by Dearbhla Reynolds
Coins old and new by Ciara Keane and Dearbhla
We will make St.Bridget’s Crosses on Friday.
Northampton N.S. Won ‘The Credit Union Quiz’
Week 4
04th February – 8th February
This week the weather varied from downpours and hailstones to mild weather. The casing was taken off the raft on Monday. The raft is left to settle before the block layers come.
Today, Friday 8th February, all the water has evaporated from the raft. Blocks are being delivered. There is an odd looking shed on the site. We wonder what it is for??
Week 5
February 11th – February 15th
The block layers are busy this week. The cement mixer is churning out concrete. Blocks come in bales of 44. The brickie builds a double wall and leaves a cavity for insulation. A strip of D.P.L. Damp Proof Course is placed on the foundation under the blocks. The blocklayer uses a spirit level a line and a trowel.
The weather is fine this week. The strange shed is used to store cement / lime / pipes

Week 6
February 18th – February 22nd
The weather is frosty and sunny this week. Now it is bright until 6.30 p.m. Mr. Kelly and his team of block layers have been working hard. The front and side walls are now at full height. The new building has been knitted into the existing school building. The bales of blocks are disappearing as the men work on the wall facing the Water Tower.
We can hear the whirr of the cement mixer, the slap of the concrete on the blocks and the grating off the concrete. We hear the boss urging his men to work hard. Sarah & Mai Sheehan had a new baby sister on Monday, 18th 2008. Mr. McDonagh’s new baby Sean was born on Thursday, 21st February 2008.
Week 7
February 25th – February 29th
The outside walls are now finished. The block layers are building the inside walls to divide the building into rooms. The inside walls are single walls. This week, we can hear the clang of Iron as the men erect the scaffolding. They hope to start building the gables soon.
We can hear the rain dancing on the roof of the prefab and the wind swirling around. We have Mr. McDonagh our book of poems and cards for baby Sean. He was very happy. This week, we are busy writing poems and cards for Mother’s Day. We are working on our Write-a-book Project too. Friday is February 29th, as 2008 is a leap year. I am in third class now and I will be secondary school the next time a leap year comes in 2012.

Week 8
March 03rd – March 07th
It snowed on Monday but alas! as it was wet, it quickly melted. There was a stirring wind blowing. The hollow core was put in on Saturday. This forms the roof of the classroom and the floor of the upstairs.
The stairs are now in place too. At 7.30 a.m. Saturday morning, five lorries of hollow core were lining up. A giant crane hoisted the slabs of concrete into place until 6.00 p.m. There are supports under the slabs until a layer of concrete goes in on top. There is netting around the scaffolding to keep men safe as they block lay the gables and start roofing.
