Knex Challenge 2006
By: Nina
On the 18th April, a man called Barry Finnegan came in from G.M.I.T. (Galway – Mayo Institute of Technology). He came to teach us about construction engineering. We were put into teams and given a task. We had to make a rescue boat from Knex. There were certain things that had to be in the boat. The rescue boat had to have a mask for communicating with radios. It had to have a cabin for the rescue crew. It needed a ladder to help people get on to the boat. It had to have a steering wheel. It had to be under a certain length and width.
We were given an hour to design and construct our boat. We were given a pencil and a ruler from Barry as well. He told us all about the different types of engineering. He told us what type of engineering he does. When we had finished, he went around and we told him about our ships. There were loads of different boats. They were all very good. My partner and I drew a quick sketch of our boat. We tried to design it but we came across a few difficulties but we worked it out in the end. We worked on connecting different pieces together to fix our problem. Barry is going to send the scores to G.M.I.T. and they will sort it out there. It was great fun.

In 2003 our school became the first school in South Galway to hoist the prestigious Green Flag.
The Green Flag is an internationally recognised award presented to school groups who strive to create a litter free zone in an ecologically and environmentally friendly school.
