Summer : By Phoebe Staehelin

Summer is my favourite time of the year. There are so many things to do. People eat ice-cream in the sun and have barbeques. They can go sailing in boats and go to the beach building sandcastles, having picnics, swimming in the sea and even surfing. People often wear shorts and t-shirts as well. Sadly this summer hasn’t been the same. The weather has been very bad with only a few days of sunshine. I hated sitting around at home doing nothing while the rain was pouring outside. All of Europe was supposed to be affected by the bad weather.

We got our holidays off school on the 22nd of June and came back on the 30th of August, which was about 10 weeks of holidays altogether. The summer days were a bit longer even though the weather was bad.

There were a couple of festivals on this summer. The Crinniu na mBad and the Galway Arts Festival. In the Crinniu na mBad, there are boat races and lots of different stalls. The Crinniu na mBad is in our local village, Kinvara. It was on for 2 days. I went on both of the days. The first day was awful because it was pouring rain but the second day was great because it was probably the sunniest day of the season. The Galway Arts Festival was ok. I went to the mocnes parade on one of the days. The theme of the parade was an old fashioned theme. It was quite good.

I went to a few places during the summer as well. I went to Westport and Fethard. I went to Westport for three days. I went to a hotel in Westport called Westport Woods Hotel. We arrive in the evening and had dinner and had a swim in the pool. The day after that, we went to the Westport town and the day after that, we went to Westport House. Westport House was good. We went sailing, we went to the animal park and we went to a restaurant. I went to my grandparent’s house in Fethard in Co. Tipperary for a week and a half as well. I went to the greyhound races, the cinema and lots more places too.

On the last week of the summer, my grandparents from Switzerland came over. We went to a few places with them, like we went to Galway with them twice and we went to restaurants and other places like that with them as well. After that, it was back to school.

The hurling is finished and all the hurlers are resting for the All Ireland Finals in September. But for the young people, they will miss it but they will be looking forward to starting again soon.

This year, I went to Spain and I had a great time. We went to a place called Portadventura. It had a theme park and a water park. It was really good. Then we went on the jeep safari. It was where we went up to the top of a mountain and we had a few stops on the way up and when we were going down, they put on the four wheel drive and we went really fast down and it was really bumpy and we all got water guns to squirt people in the other jeeps. It was really fun.

This year, we have a new teacher. Her name is Ms.Aisling Corless and she is teaching Junior and Senior Infants. We have two new prefabs, 1st, 2nd & 3rd class are taught in one and Ms.Kelly uses the other one.

The Kinvara U11 Hurling team got a bronze back from Mosney. We lost the first match against a team from Cork called Douglas and beat a team called Faughan that Sunday. We got the medals and we were very happy with what we got. Also, Rory Cullinane and P.J. Kelly also from Kinvara, were competing in the long jump and 100m sprint. We left to go home on Monday.

The All Ireland quarter finals and semi finals were all great matches. Galway U21 beat Cork in the All Ireland semi final and are playing Dublin in the All Ireland. I will be going to see that match and I am very excited because the whole U11 team are going on a bus. I enjoyed my summer a lot.
